Vincent Meessen  PRESIDENT OF THE JURY

Vincent Meessen ontwikkelt een artistieke praktijk die zowel discursief als collaboratief is. Van het beeld in beweging over kunstinstallaties tot typografische design, zijn visuele praktijk richt zich zowel op de vorm als de methode. Door tekens, beelden en occulte feiten te herbeschouwen, onderzoekt hij de actuele effecten van de koloniale matrix die de westerse moderniteit heeft geërfd. Hij vertegenwoordigde België op de 56ste Biënnale van Venetië (2015) en stelde onlangs solo tentoon op Printemps de Septembre in Toulouse (2016), in WIELS, Brussel (2016) en in duo in BOZAR (2017) en Kunsthalle Basel (2015). Recent nam hij ook deel aan groepstentoonstellingen, zoals op de voorbije Biënnale van Taipei (2016). Zijn films werden geprojecteerd op talrijke festivals en in musea wereldwijd waaronder het Internationale Filmfestival van Rotterdam (2016), het Lincoln Center (NYC, 2016), het Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA, Seoul, 2016). Hij is lid van Jubilee, een platform voor artistiek onderzoek en productie. Meessen wordt regelmatig uitgenodigd als spreker op talrijke seminaries en kunstscholen, zowel in België als het buitenland.

Vincent Meessen développe une pratique artistique à la fois discursive et collaborative. De l’image en mouvement aux dispositifs de présentation en passant par le design typographique, sa pratique visuelle est affaire de forme tout autant que de méthode. En revisitant des signes, des images et des faits occultés, il sonde les effets actuels de la matrice coloniale héritée de la modernité occidentale. Il a représenté la Belgique à la 56ème Biennale de Venise (2015) et exposé récemment en solo au Printemps de septembre à Toulouse (2016), au WIELS à Bruxelles (2016), en duo à BOZAR (2017), à la Kunshalle Basel (2015) et dans des expositions de groupe récentes dont à la dernière Biennale de Taipei (2016). Ses films ont été projetés dans de nombreux festivals et musées dont le Festival international du film de Rotterdam (2016), le Lincoln Center (NYC, 2016), le Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA, Seoul, 2016). Il est membre de Jubilee, une plateforme de recherche et de production artistique. Meessen intervient régulièrement comme conférencier dans de nombreux séminaires et écoles d’art tant en Belgique qu’à l’étranger.

Vincent Meessen develops an artistic practice wich is both discursive and collaborative. From the moving image to art installations to typographic design, his visual practice focuses on the form as well as the method. He represented Belgium at the 56th Venice Biennale (2015) and recently held solo exhibitions at Printemps de septembre in Toulouse (2016), at WIELS in Brussels (2016) and BOZAR (2017), at Kunsthalle Basel (2015) and in recent group exhibitions such at the latest Taipei Biennale (2016). His films were screened at numerous festivals and museums worldwide including the International Film Festival of Rotterdam (2016), Lincoln Center (NYC, 2016) and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA, Seoul, 2016). He is member of Jubilee, a platform for research and artistic production. Meessen is regularly invited as a speaker at many seminars and art schools, both in Belgium and abroad.

FEDERICO WINDHAUSEN

Federico Windhausen is een filmwetenschapper en curator uit Buenos Aires. Hij heeft filmprogramma’s gepresenteerd op plekken zoals TIFF Bell Lightbox, het Londense Filmfestival, de San Francisco Cinematheque, Anthology Film Archives en de National Gallery of Art. In 2014 leidde hij het eerste Oberhausen Seminarie en voor het Themaprogramma van het Internationaal Kortfilmfestival van Oberhausen cureerde hij in 2016 een reeks programma’s over hedendaags Latijns-Amerika. Deze programma’s werden eveneens vertoond op het recente Ambulante-festival in Mexico en reisden ook door heel de Verenigde Staten. Hij is de redacteur van A Companion to Experimental Film, een anthologie die binnenkort verschijnt. Momenteel werkt hij aan een boek over de Argentijnse experimentele film.

Federico Windhausen est un programmateur et spécialiste du cinéma qui vit à Buenos Aires. Il a composé des programmes pour des lieux tels que le TIFF Bell Lightbox, le Festival du Film de Londres, la San Francisco Cinematheque, l’Anthology Film Archives et la National Gallery of Art. En 2014, il a dirigé le premier Oberhausen Seminar, et pour le programme thématique du festival international du court métrage d’Oberhausen en 2016, il a mis sur pied une série de programmes sur l’Amérique latine d’aujourd’hui. Ces programmes ont également été intégrés dans le festival Ambulante à Mexico en 2017 et présentés à travers les États-Unis. Il est l’éditeur d’une anthologie à venir, intitulée A Companion to Experimental Cinema et rédige actuellement un livre sur le cinéma expérimental argentin.

Federico Windhausen is a film scholar and curator based in Buenos Aires. He has presented film programmes at venues such as TIFF Bell Lightbox, the London Film Festival, the San Francisco Cinematheque, Anthology Film Archives, and the National Gallery of Art. In 2014 he led the first Oberhausen Seminar and for the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen’s Theme programme in 2016 he curated a series of programmes about contemporary Latin America. Those programmes were also shown at the Ambulante festival in Mexico in 2017 and throughout the United States. He is the editor of a forthcoming anthology titled A Companion to Experimental Cinema and is currently writing a book about Argentine experimental cinema.

CHARLOTTE PROCTER

Charlotte Procter is de collectiebeheerder van LUX, de belangrijkste collectie van bewegende beelden van kunstenaars in Groot-Brittannië en de grootste distributeur van dergelijke werken in Europa. Ze is verantwoordelijk voor de aankoop van historisch en hedendaags materiaal voor de collectie en ook de digitalisering van werken van onder andere Peter Gidal, Malcolm Le Grice, Annabel Nicholson en Lis Rhodes stond onder haar toezicht. Procter organiseerde en nam deel aan talrijke internationale tentoonstellingsprogramma’s, vertoningen, lezingen en workshops. Als lid van de Cinenova Working Group trad ze op als curator van tentoonstellingen en vertoningsprogramma’s terwijl ze zich ook heeft ingezet voor het behoud en de bescherming van de feministische film- en videocollectie van Cinenova.

Charlotte Procter est directrice de collection à LUX, une des plus importantes collections du Royaume-Uni en matière de films d’artistes, et le plus grand distributeur en Europe de ce type d’œuvres. Directrice des acquisitions de matériau historique et contemporain pour la collection, elle a également dirigé la numérisation des œuvres de Peter Gidal, Malcolm Le Grice, Annabel Nicholson et Lis Rhodes, parmi d’autres. Elle a organisé de multiples expositions et mis sur pied de nombreux programmes, débats et ateliers internationaux. En sa qualité de membre du Cinenova Working Group, elle a concocté diverses expositions et de nombreux programmes. Elle a également contribué à la conservation de la collection de films et de vidéos féministes de Cinenova.

Charlotte Procter is the Collection Manager of LUX, the UK’s most significant collection of artists’ moving images and the largest distributor of such works in Europe. Manager of acquisitions of historic and contemporary materials to the collection, she has also overseen the digitisation of works by Peter Gidal, Malcolm Le Grice, Annabel Nicholson and Lis Rhodes amongst others. She has organised and participated in numerous exhibition programmes, screenings, talks and workshops internationally. As a member of the Cinenova Working Group she has curated exhibitions and programmed screenings in addition to contributing to the care and preservation of the feminist film and video collection Cinenova.

YOUNG JURY 2017

In 2017 reikt het festival voor de tweede keer de YOUNG JURY PRIZE (€ 1 000) uit. Een jury van studenten aan Nederlands- en Franstalige kunstscholen schenkt deze prijs aan een film uit de Âge d’Or 2017-competitie. Op deze manier wil het festival de ontmoeting tussen opkomende kunstenaars bevorderen en actuele en gedurfde cinematografische creatie ondersteunen.

De YOUNG JURY 2017 bestaat uit Siham Bouzerda (afgestudeerd in fotografie en film aan INRACI), Juliette Le Monnyer (bachelor film aan de Paris 1 Universiteit Sorbonne, masterstudent videokunst aan ERG), Jules Urban (bachelorstudent aan ERG), Audrey Lenchantin (master in fotografie aan La Cambre) and Joeri Verbesselt (masterstudent film aan LUCA School of Arts, campus Sint-Lukas Brussel).

In 2018 krijgt de young jury ook een carte blanche in CINEMATEK. Dit initiatief werd mogelijk gemaakt in het kader van het culturele samenwerkingsakkoord tussen de Vlaamse en Franstalige gemeenschap.

En 2017, le festival attribue pour la seconde année consécutive son YOUNG JURY PRIZE (€ 1 000). Ce prix sera décerné à un des films de la compétition de l’Âge d’Or par un jury d’étudiants issus des écoles d’art francophones et néerlandophones. De cette manière, le festival entend à nouveau favoriser la rencontre entre des artistes en devenir et une création cinématographique actuelle et audacieuse dont il se veut le reflet.

Le YOUNG JURY 2017 se compose de Siham Bouzerda (diplômée de l’INRACI en photographie et en cinéma), Juliette Le Monnyer (bachelière en cinéma de l’Université Paris 1 Sorbonne, étudiante en master Vidéo Art à l’ERG), Jules Urban (étudiant en BAC 2 à l’ERG), Audrey Lenchantin (Master en photographie de l’Ecole nationale supérieure des Arts visuels de La Cambre) et Joeri Verbesselt (étudiant en master film à LUCA School of Arts, Sint-Lukas Bruxelles).

En 2018, les jeunes jurés se verront également offrir une carte blanche à CINEMATEK. Cette initiative a été rendue possible dans le cadre de l’accord de coopération culturelle entre les Communautés flamande et française.

In 2017, the festival awards for the second consecutive year the YOUNG JURY PRIZE (€ 1 000). A jury consisting of students from Brussels art schools will award this prize to a film from the 2017 Âge d’Or competition. The award aims to encourage upcoming artists to meet each other and support bold, contemporary filmmaking, which is precisely the festival’s goal.

The YOUNG JURY 2017 consists of Siham Bouzerda (graduated in photography and cinema from INRACI), Juliette Le Monnyer (bachelor in cinema from the Paris 1 University Sorbonne, master’s degree student in Video Art at ERG), Jules Urban (student in BAC 2 at ERG), Audrey Lenchantin (master degree in photography at La Cambre) and Joeri Verbesselt (master’s degree student in cinema at LUCA School of Arts, campus Sint-Lukas Brussels).

In 2018, the young jury will also be offered a ‘carte blanche’ at CINEMATEK. This initiative was made possible within the framework of the cultural cooperation agreement between the Flemish and French communities.
