The Âge d’Or Festival returns to CINEMATEK

A festival of encounters and discoveries of experimental cinema, Âge d’Or brings together the work of many artists and filmmakers whose daring formal bias, their approach  breaking with the cinematographic conformism, and their powerful content have seduced us.

This audacity and this committed language is something shared by the 34 contemporary films of the competition, created in the four corners of the world by young or confirmed artists. They are also the guidelines of the panoramas that are to be presented in parallel: Incisions and Imprints: Argentine Experimental Cinema, a profound and exciting historical journey through the avant-garde cinema of Argentina, which, because of its heterogeneity, brings to the fore the aesthetic talent and ideologies of Argentine artists from the end of the 1960s to the present day. Distribute and Circulate is a program that shows us the work and collective organization of British feminist filmmakers reflecting the political and cultural movements of the 1970s and 1980s in the UK.

In dialogue with this retrospective aspect, Âge d’Or also presents two contemporary focuses: Time, a Hesitant Smile, which revisits the work of Johan Grimonprez, a visual artist, documentary filmmaker and anthropologist, whose personal, metaphorical and demanding language is constantly praised by critics. This “Grimonprez event” – as imagined by the artist himself – is a unique opportunity to witness how his plastic art is in constant dialogue with his filmography, shown here in its entirety. Such interlacing is also to be found in Objects of Desire, a program combining, with great coherence, the films of the young and talented Austrian artist Antoinette Zwirchmayr with other films that  echo them.

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to enjoy as much as we do these strong films, the special screenings, as well as the vibrant documentaries by the independent director George T. Nierenberg, or the Treasures from Knokke. Many artist will honor us with their presence, presenting their work. An ambitious and thrilling journey that will make us leave together, for a few days, in search of poetry and subversion through the eye of the camera.

Het festival nodigt u uit een uitgelezen selectie experimentele films te ontdekken en hun makers te ontmoeten. Deze kunstenaars en filmmakers durven de geschreven en ongeschreven regels van de filmtaal te doorbreken en te vernieuwen. Zowel de vorm van de films, als hun inhoudelijke kracht hebben ons verleid.

Deze stoutmoedige dapperheid en geëngageerde taal vinden we terug bij de 34 hedendaagse films in competitie, gerealiseerd door jonge of gevestigde kunstenaars uit meer dan elf verschillende landen. Ze kenmerken ook de dynamiek van de panorama’s die parallel worden gepresenteerd: Incisions and Imprints: Argentine Experimental Cinema biedt een diepgravende en fascinerende, historische reis door de avant-gardecinema in Argentinië vanaf het einde van de jaren 1960 tot vandaag. Ontdek de diversiteit, het esthetische talent en de ideologieën van de Argentijnse kunstenaars. Het programma Distribute and Circulate toont het werk en de collectieve organisatie van Britse feministische filmmakers van de jaren 1970 en 1980, en hun verhouding tot politieke en culturele bewegingen van die tijd.

In dialoog met deze retrospectieve luiken focust Âge d’Or ook op twee hedendaagse kunstenaars: Time, a Hesitant Smile blikt terug op het oeuvre van Johan Grimonprez, de Vlaamse beeldend kunstenaar, documentair filmmaker en antropoloog wiens aparte, metaforische en veeleisende taal voortdurend wordt geprezen door internationale critici. Dit ‘Grimonprez-evenement’, bedacht door de kunstenaar, is een unieke kans om te zien hoe zijn plastisch werk intens verbonden is met zijn filmografie die integraal zal worden vertoond. Eenzelfde vervlochtenheid vind je ook terug in Objects of Desire, een erg coherent programma waarin de jonge en talentvolle Oostenrijkse kunstenaar Antoinette Zwirchmayr haar films  toont samen met andere films die er voor haar duidelijk mee verbonden zijn.

Kom genieten van deze sterke films, de speciale vertoningen, de bezielde documentaires van de onafhankelijke regisseur George T. Nierenberg en de Parels van Knokke. Veel kunstenaars komen zelf hun film voorstellen. Deze vierde editie van het festival biedt een ambitieus en opwindende avontuur via het cameraobjectief, op zoek naar subversie en poëzie.

Festival de rencontres et de découvertes des cinémas expérimentaux, il rassemble le travail de nombreux artistes et cinéastes, dont le parti-pris formel audacieux, l’écriture qui rompt avec le conformisme cinématographique et la force du propos nous ont séduits.

Cette audace et ce langage engagé traversent les 34 films contemporains en compétition, réalisés aux quatre coins du monde par des artistes jeunes ou confirmés. Ils sont aussi les lignes directrices des panoramas qui seront présentés en parallèle: Incisions and Imprints: Argentine Experimental Cinema, profond et passionnant parcours historique du cinéma d’avant-garde en Argentine qui, par son hétérogénéité, met en lumière le talent esthétique et les idéologies des artistes argentins, de la fin des années 1960 à aujourd’hui. Distribute and Circulate, une programmation qui nous montre le travail et l’organisation collective de réalisatrices britanniques féministes et qui se font l’écho des mouvements politiques et culturels des années 1970 et 1980.

En dialogue avec ces volets rétrospectifs, l’Age d’Or propose deux focus contemporains : Time, a Hesitant Smile, qui revient sur l’œuvre de Johan Grimonprez, plasticien, documentariste, anthropologue et dont le langage singulier, métaphorique et exigeant est constamment salué par la critique. Cet « événement Grimonprez », imaginé par l’artiste, est une occasion unique de voir se répondre son travail plastique et sa filmographie montrée ici dans son intégralité. Il sera aussi question d’entrelacement dans Objects of Desire, programme qui combine, avec une grande cohérence, les films de la jeune et talentueuse artiste autrichienne Antoinette Zwirchmayr, à d’autres films qui leur font écho.

C’est avec un plaisir énorme que nous vous invitons à aimer autant que nous ces films forts, des séances spéciales, les vibrants documentaires du réalisateur indépendant George T. Nierenberg et les Perles de Knokke. De nombreux artistes nous font l’honneur de venir les présenter. Un voyage ambitieux et palpitant, qui nous fera partir ensemble, durant quelques jours, à la recherche de la poésie et de la subversion à travers l’objectif.
