John Smith vit et travaille à Londres où il enseigne à la University of East London. Pendant ses études de cinéma au Royal College of Art, il subit l’influence de l’art conceptuel et des théories structurelles qui dominent le cinéma d’avant-garde de l’époque. Auteur de plus de cinquante films depuis 1972, John Smith propose une exploration ludique des possibilités du langage cinématographique en subvertissant habilement les frontières entre documentaire et fiction, entre représentation et abstraction. Ses films ont été montrés dans les plus grands festivals à travers le monde, et ont été couronnés de multiples distinctions. Il a également reçu le Prix de la Fondation Paul Hamlyn en 2011 et le Film London’s Jarman Award en 2013 pour l’ensemble de son œuvre.
John Smith woont en werkt in Londen waar hij doceert aan de University of East London. Tijdens zijn filmstudies aan het Royal College of Art werd hij beïnvloed door de conceptuele kunst en de structurele theorieën die de avant-garde cinema van die tijd domineerden. Sinds 1972 maakte hij al meer dan vijftig films waarin hij op een speelse manier de mogelijkheden van filmtaal verkent en de grenzen tussen documentaire en fictie, representatie en abstractie slim ondermijnt. Zijn films werden wereldwijd getoond op de grootste festivals en meermaals bekroond. Hij kreeg in 2011 een Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Artists en in 2013 de Film London’s Jarman Award voor zijn gehele oeuvre.
John Smith lives and works in London, where he teaches at the University of East London. During his film studies at the Royal College of Art, he was influenced by conceptual art and the structural theories that dominated the avant-garde cinema of that period. Author of more than fifty films since 1972, John Smith offers a playful exploration of the possibilities of film language cleverly subverting the boundaries between documentary and fiction, representation and abstraction. His films have been shown in major festivals around the world and have received many awards. He also received the Paul Hamlyn Foundation award in 2011 and the Film London’s Jarman Award in 2013 for lifetime achievement.

Trois films récents, subtils et drôles de John Smith. Un moyen métrage testant, en bord de mer, les fondamentaux du cinéma : une caméra, un cadre, des corps, le passage de ces corps dans ce cadre, l’attente et les imprévus du tournage. Et deux sortes de petits limericks (courts poèmes, souvent anglais, drôles et facétieux) jouant du décalage et de la surprise. Dad’s Stick est un véritable tour de passe-passe : en cinq minutes chrono il nous mène en bateau, nous ouvre les portes d’un monde et nous dresse le portrait d’un homme en trois objets.

Drie recente, subtiele en grappige films van John Smith. Een korte film test aan de rand van de zee de fundamenten van cinema: een camera, een kader, lichamen, de beweging van die lichamen in dat kader, het wachten en het onverwachte van filmopnames. Daarnaast twee kleine limericks (korte grappige gedichten met een strak metrum) die spelen met verdraaiing en verrassing. Dad’s Stick is een echte goocheltruc: in precies vijf minuten neemt hij ons mee voor een boottochtje, opent hij de deuren van een wereld en portretteert hij een man aan de hand van drie objecten.

Three subtle and funny recent films by John Smith. A short film testing, on the beachfront, the fundamentals of cinema: a camera, a frame, bodies, the passage of these bodies within the frame, the expected and the unexpected during the shooting. And two kinds of small limericks (short and witty – mostly – English poems), offbeat and with an element of surprise. Dad’s Stick is a hocus-pocus: in only five minutes Smith takes us for a ride, opens the doors to a world and portraits a man trough three objects.
