Gebaseerd op Andrew Feinsteins wereldwijd geprezen boek The Shadow World: Inside the Global Arms Trade onthult Grimonprez’s explosieve film de duistere wereld van de internationale wapenhandel. Shadow World doorweeft archiefmateriaal en interviews met deskundigen en onthult dat corruptie geen vuile kleine bijwerking van de wapenhandel is maar in feite zijn bepalende factor. Politici, die geacht worden onze hoop en dromen te vertegenwoordigen, verkopen ons angst en nachtmerries in het belang van de bedrijven die van de oorlog profiteren. Door licht te werpen op hoe onze werkelijkheid wordt gereconstrueerd, betoogt de film, met alarmerende aannemelijkheid, dat we de functie van de oorlog geprivatiseerd hebben. Als gevolg daarvan bepalen steekpenningen en corruptie het economische en buitenlandse politieke beleid van enkele van de grootste landen ter wereld om ervoor te zorgen dat er altijd een oorlog moet worden gevoerd.

Basé sur le livre d’Andrew Feinstein, The Shadow World : Inside the Global Arms Trade, le film détonant de Grimonprez révèle le monde trouble du commerce international des armes. Assemblant des séquences d’archives et des interviews d’experts, Shadow World dévoile que la corruption n’est pas un effet secondaire pervers mineur du commerce des armes, mais son facteur déterminant. La classe politique, censée représenter nos espoirs et nos rêves, nous vend de la peur et des cauchemars dans l’intérêt des entreprises à qui la guerre fait précisément gagner beaucoup d’argent. En mettant en lumière la façon dont nos réalités sont construites, le film affirme, avec une plausibilité alarmante, que nous avons privatisé la fonction de la guerre. Par conséquent, les pots-de-vin et la corruption définissent l’économie et la politique étrangère des grandes puissances mondiales, s’assurant qu’il y aura toujours une guerre à mener.

Based on Andrew Feinstein’s globally acclaimed book The Shadow World: Inside the Global Arms Trade, Grimonprez’ explosive film reveals the murky world of the international arms trade. Stitching together archive footage and expert interviews, Shadow World reveals that corruption is not a dirty little side effect of the arms trade, but in fact its defining factor. Politicians, who are supposed to represent our hopes and dreams, sell us fear and nightmares in the interest of the very corporations that profit from war. By shedding light on how our realities are being constructed, the film argues, with alarming plausibility, that we have privatised the function of war. As a result, bribes and corruption determine the economic and foreign policies of some of the biggest countries in the world, making sure that there is always a war to be fought.
