INTRODUCTION TO JOANA HADJITHOMAS & KHALIL JOREIGE
Nés à Beyrouth en 1969, c’est en photographiant les ruines de la ville laminée par la guerre au début des années 1990, que Joana Hadjithomas et Khalil Joreige sont devenus artistes : par nécessité, sans passer par une école d’art ou de cinéma. Photographies, installations, films, vidéos, leur œuvre, vaste, se nourrit de leur questionnement sur la fabrication de l’image et les événements politiques et historiques de leur pays. Ils explorent indistinctement l’histoire (officielle et tenue secrète), la latence des images, la mémoire (individuelle et collective), l’imaginaire et sa transmission, et enfin leur propre biographie, jamais séparée de leur travail. À l’instar des très beaux croisements entre leur approche plastique et cinématographique, les artistes aiment à mêler les genres: à la frontière entre documentaire et fiction, ils réalisent en 2008 Je veux voir (présenté en selection officielle, Un certain regard, à Cannes), où Catherine Deneuve parcourt les régions libanaises traversées par la guerre de 2006. Exposés dans les biennales, musées ou centres d’art contemporain partout dans le monde, le Jeu de Paume à Paris leur consacrait cette année une large exposition individuelle.
Joana Hadjithomas en Khalil Joreige werden beide geboren in 1969 in Beirut. Ze werden kunstenaar door de ruïnes van de stad te fotograferen, begin jaren ’90 verwoest door de oorlog; uit noodzaak dus, zonder naar een kunst- of filmschool te gaan. Foto’s, installaties, films, video’s: hun omvangrijke werk voedt zich met vragen rond de fabricatie van het beeld en de politieke en historische gebeurtenissen in hun land. Ze verkennen zowel de geschiedenis (de officiële en de geheimgehouden), de latentie van beelden, de individuele en collectieve herinnering, de verbeelding (en de overdracht van die verbeelding) als de eigen biografie, die nooit van hun werk gescheiden is. Net zoals ze prachtige kruisbestuivingen aangaan tussen beeldende kunst en film, mengen de kunstenaars graag genres: op de grens tussen documentaire en fictie, maken ze in 2008 Je veux voir, opgenomen in de officiële selectie van ‘Un certain regard’ in Cannes, waarin Catherine Deneuve de regio’s doorkruist die door de oorlog van juli 2006 geteisterd zijn. Het werk van Hadjithomas en Joreige wordt wereldwijd getoond op biënnales, in musea en centra voor hedendaagse kunst. Dit jaar nog wijdde Jeu de Paume in Parijs een grote solotentoonstelling aan hun werk.
It was by photographing the ruins of Beirut, destroyed by the war in the early 1990s, that Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige became artists. By necessity, in other words, without going to an art or film school. Photographs, installations, films, videos: their vast work feeds on questions concerning the manufacture of images as well as their country’s political and historical events. By weaving thematic or conceptual links between each practice, they indiscriminately explore the history (both official and secret), the latency of images, individual and collective memory, the imaginary and its transmission, and finally, their own biography, something which is never separated from their work. On the border between documentary and fiction, they realised I Want to See (Je veux voir) in 2008 and presented in the official selection, Un Certain Regard, at Cannes, they asked Catherine Deneuve to traverse the regions ravished by the war of July 2006. Hadjithomas and Joreige are shown at biennales, in museums and contemporary art centres worldwide. This year still, Jeu de Paume in Paris devoted a solo exhibition to their work. Âge d’Or Festival hosts a retrospective of their features and short films, shows installations, and organises a masterclass about their work with Dirk Snauwaert.
