Sonbert begint in 1966 films te maken wanneer hij cinema studeert aan de universiteit van New York. Where Did Our Love Go? vat op magistrale wijze de geest van zijn generatie via het dagelijks leven van The Factory van Warhol, bespiegelingen over Le Mépris van Godard en North by Northwest van Hitchcock, vrouwelijke rockgroepen van toen… Hall of Mirrors is ontstaan tijdens een les aan de universiteit van New York, toen Sonbert werd gevraagd een narratieve sequentie te monteren uit beelden van een Hollywood-film die nooit werd voltooid. Klassieke beelden die Sonbert aanvulde met opnamen die hij zelf maakte van twee Warholiaanse supersterren: René Picard en Gerard Malanga. The Tenth Legion illustreert Sonberts meesterschap in schoudercameravoering. De camera is constant in beweging en volgt de protagonisten in een choreografie die in clair-obscur licht baadt.

Sonbert commence à faire des films en 1966 alors qu’il étudie le cinéma à l’université de New York. Where Did Our Love Go? capte magistralement l’esprit de sa génération à travers le quotidien de la Factory de Warhol, des retours sur Le Mépris de Godard et La mort aux trousses d’Hitchcock, des groupes de rock féminins de l’époque… Hall of Mirrors est né lors d’un cours à l’université de New York, où il lui fut demandé de monter en une séquence narrative des plans d’un film hollywoodien qui ne fut jamais achevé. Images classiques que Sonbert agrémente de plans qu’il a tournés lui-même de deux superstars warholiennes : René Picard et Gerard Malanga. The Tenth Legion illustre la maîtrise de Sonbert pour la prise de vue caméra à l’épaule, constamment en mouvement, tandis qu’elle suit des protagonistes à la manière d’une chorégraphie baignée de lumières en clair-obscur.

Sonbert began making films in 1966, as a student at New York University’s film school. Where Did Our Love Go? captures the spirit of his generation, through the Warhol Factory days, glances at Godards’ Le Mépris and Hitchcocks’ North by Northwest, Girl rock groups and a disco opening. Hall of Mirrors is an outgrowth of one of Sonbert’s film classes at NYU, in which he was given the outtakes from a Hollywood film to re-edit into a narrative sequence. Adding to this found footage, Sonbert filmed Warhol’s superstars René Ricard and Gerard Malanga. The Tenth Legion stylistically exemplifies Sonbert’s masterful use of a constantly moving hand-held camera as it trails the college-age protagonists in choreographed fashion, and of chiaroscuro lighting effects in interior scenes.
