Talrijke creatieve en culturele werelden hebben Warren Sonbert geïnspireerd, maar geen enkele beleefde hij misschien intenser en verder van de spotlights dan die van zijn homoseksuele identiteit en de kwelling van het aidsvirus. In drie films geeft dit programma een beeld van de relatie die Warren Sonbert had met de gay-identiteit en -gemeenschap. Amphetamine zoomt in op jonge mannen die benzedrine gebruiken en de liefde bedrijven in de tijd van Sex, drugs and rock and roll; Noblesse oblige, een film met een complexe en virtuoze montage, brengt verslag uit over de bewogen manifestaties in San Francisco naar aanleiding van de moord op de burgemeester en op gemeenteraadslid (en gay-militant) Harvey Milk; Whiplash tenslotte, een elegische meditatie van Sonbert over zijn eigen sterfelijkheid, zal pas voltooid worden na de dood van de cineast, maar volgens zijn instructies.

Des nombreux univers créatifs et culturels qui ont inspiré Warren Sonbert, aucun peut-être n’a été plus intensément vécu, et cependant aussi peu reconnu publiquement, que son identité homosexuelle et l’affliction que lui causa le virus du sida. En trois films, ce premier programme rend compte des relations qu’entretenait Warren Sonbert avec l’univers et la communauté gays. Amphetamine s’attarde sur de jeunes hommes consommant de la benzédrine et faisant l’amour à l’ère du Sex, drugs and rock and roll ; Noblesse Oblige, film au montage complexe et virtuose, rend compte des manifestations qui ébranlèrent San Francisco au lendemain de l’assassinat du maire de la ville et du conseiller municipal et militant gay Harvey Milk ; Enfin, Whiplash, méditation élégiaque de Sonbert sur sa propre mortalité, ne sera achevé qu’après la mort du cinéaste, mais selon ses instructions.

Of the many creative and cultural universes inhabited by Sonbert, none was perhaps more acutely experienced yet least publicly acknowledged than his homosexual identity and affliction with AIDS. This programme examines Sonbert’s relationship to the gay universe, beginning with his provocative and playful first film, Amphetamine, which depicts young men shooting amphetamines and making love in the era of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. The programme continues with Noblesse Oblige, a masterfully edited work that features imagery Sonbert photographed of protests in San Francisco following the murders of Mayor George Moscone and Councilman Harvey Milk at the hands of Dan White. The programme culminates with Whiplash, his elegiac meditation on his own mortality, a film that was completed posthumously according to Sonbert’s instructions.
