Women’s Experimental Filmmaking in Britain

Deze reeks brengt recente digitale restauraties samen van twee Britse verdelers van kunstenaarsfilms: LUX, voorheen London Film-makers’ Co-op (LFMC), en Cinenov, voorheen Circles. Ze plaatst werk in de kijker van verschillende vrouwelijke kunstenaars-filmmakers die in de jaren tachtig actief waren. 2016 markeerde de 50ste verjaardag van LFMC. De films werden onder andere gedigitaliseerd als onderdeel van een langetermijn-toegangsproject dat door LUX werd geïnitieerd om dat jubileum te markeren. Hoewel de meerderheid van de films in dit programma gemaakt werden in de jaren 1980 en later toont de bredere selectie een stuk LFMC-geschiedenis vanaf het midden van de jaren 1960 tot midden 1990. Circles Distribution werd opgericht in 1979 door een groep vrouwen die aangesloten waren bij LFMC waaronder de filmmakers Lis Rhodes, Tina Keane en Annabel Nicolson. De organisatie werd gevormd op het hoogtepunt van de vrouwenbevrijdingsbeweging in Groot-Brittannië met als doel door vrouwen gemaakte experimentele film en video te verdelen. Circles, ontstaan vanuit een opkomend feministisch discours, verdedigde het werk van vrouwelijke filmakers binnen hun eigen ruimtes en contexten. Het programma begint met een belangrijke filmmaakster uit die periode: Sandra Lahire. Lahire was zowel die actief in LFMC als in Circles en haar betrokkenheid bij de radicale feministische politieke actie van die tijd stond centraal in haar innovatieve experimentele films. De twee andere programma’s brengen een eclectische verzameling films die vier decennia LFMC-geschiedenis bestrijkt en die zich afspeelt buiten de ‘structurele’ canon waarmee LFMC doorgaans geassocieerd wordt. Het zijn films die aansluiten bij de politieke, culturele en esthetische bewegingen die in de late jaren zeventig en tachtig opdoken. Terwijl het materiaal en de methode centraal blijven staan, openen deze werken zich voor andere interessegebieden en thema’s zoals performance, de huiselijke sfeer en de vrouwelijke stem.

Ces trois programmes rassemblent des restaurations numériques réalisées par deux distributeurs britanniques, LUX (ex-London Filmmakers Co-operative) et Cinenova (ex-Circles), et mettent en avant les films réalisés par différentes artistes et cinéastes actives dans les années 1980. Ces films, parmi d’autres, ont été numérisés dans le cadre d’un projet à long terme mis en œuvre par LUX à l’occasion du 50e anniversaire de la LFMC (London Filmmakers Co-operative) [2016]. Si la majorité des films repris dans ces trois programmes datent des années 1980, des films du milieu des années 1960 au milieu des années 1990 permettent cependant de replacer cette période dans l’histoire plus large du cinéma expérimental féminin de la LFMC.

Circles Distribution a été fondé en 1979 par un groupe de femmes affiliées à la LFMC, telles que les cinéastes Lis Rhodes, Tina Keane et Annabel Nicolson. L’organisation a été créée au paroxysme du mouvement de libération de la femme au Royaume-Uni, dans le but de distribuer des films et des vidéos réalisés par des femmes. Né d’un discours féministe émergent, Circles a défendu le travail de femmes cinéastes dans son propre réseau de lieux et d’associations. Ce programme débute par une des figures clés de cette période, Sandra Lahire. Cette artiste fut active tant à la LFMC qu’à Circles, et son implication dans les politiques féministes radicales de cette époque a profondément influencé les films expérimentaux et novateurs. Les deux autres programmes rassemblent une série éclectique de films qui parcourent quatre décennies de l’histoire de la LFMC loin du canon du « cinéma structurel » auquel elle est habituellement associée. Ces films se font l’écho des mouvements politiques, culturels et esthétiques de la fin des années 1970 et des années 1980. Sans renoncer à s’intéresser au matériau filmique et aux processus, ils s’ouvrent à d’autres préoccupations telles que la performance, l’intime et la parole féminine.

This series brings together recent digital restorations from two UK artist’s moving image distributors, LUX (formerly the London Filmmakers Co-operative) and Cinenova (formerly Circles), highlighting work by several female artist-filmmakers who were active in the 1980s. 2016 marked the 50th anniversary of the LFMC and these films, amongst others, were digitised as part of a long-term access project initiated by LUX to mark this anniversary. Whilst the majority of films works included in the programme date from the 1980s, the broader selection references the LFMC’s history from the mid 1960s to the mid 1990s.

Circles Distribution was founded in 1979 by a group of women affiliated with the LFMC, which included filmmakers Lis Rhodes, Tina Keane and Annabel Nicolson. The organisation was formed at the height of the Women’s Liberation movement in Britain, with the aim of distributing experimental film and video made by women. Born out of an emerging feminist discourse, Circles championed the work of women filmmakers within their own spaces and contexts.

The programme begins with a key filmmaker of this period, Sandra Lahire. An artist active in both the LFMC and Circles, her involvement with the radical feminist politics of the time informed her innovative experimental films. The other two programmes bring together an eclectic collection of films that encompass four decades of LFMC’s history outside the ‘structural’ canon it’s usually associated with. These are films that echo the political, cultural and aesthetic movements that emerged in the late 1970s and 1980s. Whilst they remain concerned with material and process, these works open up to other preoccupations and themes such as performance, the domestic and the female voice.
