ABCD: ASIAN EXPERIMENTAL CINEMA

Ce programme emprunte son titre au film ABCD, irrévérencieux et puissant court métrage d’animation du fameux artiste philippin Roxlee. Il présente un panel éclectique de cinéastes et vidéastes asiatiques préoccupés par le questionnement des formes conventionnelles de représentation et cherchant à inventer de nouvelles manières de voir et de comprendre la culture. Expérimentant dans le champ de l’animation, du found footage ou du montage, ou innovant radicalement dans le cadre du cinéma narratif ou documentaire, ces cinéastes font écho dans leurs films aux relations complexes qu’ils entretiennent avec le cinéma et la pratique artistique. En considérant l’hétérogénéité culturelle et la relation particulière qui se tissent en Asie entre l’individu et la communauté ou le politique, ce programme pose un regard sur les complexités esthétiques et socio-politiques du cinéma expérimental au sein du continent asiatique, vaste et contrasté. En 2014, le festival Experimenta India (Bangalore) en collaboration avec la Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology (Inde) et le Centre for Research and Education in Arts and Media, University of Westminster (Royaume-Uni) a mis sur pied à Bangalore la manifestation Comparing Experimental Cinemas, un symposium international consacré aux pratiques cinématographiques expérimentales. Cette rencontre fut le point de départ de Experimental Cinema in Asia Network (ECAN), un réseau d’échanges et de soutiens entre praticiens et chercheurs d’Indonésie, du Japon, de Hong Kong, de Malaisie, de Nouvelle-Zélande, de Corée du Sud, de Thaïlande, du Vietnam, des Philippines et d’Inde. Motivé par le besoin d’établir les termes de l’inclusion des images en mouvement non occidentales dans le circuit international de distribution et d’expositions, ECAN se propose de cartographier et de théoriser les histoires, les modes et les régionalismes des pratiques cinématographiques expérimentales en Asie.



Dit programma ontleent zijn titel aan de oneerbiedige en intense animatiefilm ABCD van de legendarische Filippijnse kunstenaar-filmmaker Roxlee. Het toont, in een eclectische mix, kunstenaars uit Azië die de confrontatie aangaan met conventionele representatievormen en die nieuwe manieren bedenken om cultuur te bekijken en te begrijpen. Deze filmmakers tonen, van experimenten met animatie, found footage en gestileerde montage tot radicale innovaties met speelfilm en documentaire film, de complexe culturele relaties die ze aangaan met filmmaken als artistieke praktijk. Door de culturele verscheidenheid te bekijken en de bijzondere relatie die in de regio bestaat tussen het zelf en de begrippen ‘gemeenschap’ en ‘politieke groep’, biedt dit programma een blik op de esthetische en sociaal-politieke complexiteit van experimenteel filmmaken binnen de enorm uitgebreide en diverse Aziatische context. In 2014 was Experimenta India gastheer van ‘Comparing Experimental Cinemas’. Het internationaal symposium rond experimentele filmpraktijken was een samenwerking tussen de Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology (Bangalore) en het Centre for Research and Education in Arts and Media van de University of Westminster en vond plaats in Bangalore. Het symposium vormde ook de inhuldiging van het Experimental Cinema in Asia Network (ECAN) voor de uitwisseling en onderlinge ondersteuning van filmbeoefenaars en -onderzoekers uit Indonesië, Japan, Hong Kong, Maleisië, Nieuw-Zeeland, Zuid-Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, de Filippijnen en India. De motivatie achter ECAN is het opnieuw definiëren van de condities rond het tonen en verspreiden van niet-westerse films. Het netwerk stelt voor om de geschiedenissen, de modi en het specifiek regionale karakter van experimentele filmpraktijken in Azië in kaart te brengen en de theorievorming erover aan te wakkeren.

 Taking its title from the irreverent and powerful animation film ABCD by the legendary Filipino artist and filmmaker Roxlee, this programme is an eclectic showcase of artists from Asia who are concerned with challenging conventional forms of representation, and devising new ways of seeing and understanding culture. From experiments in animation, found footage and stylised montage, to radical innovations with narrative and documentary forms, these filmmakers expose the complex cultural relationships they share with filmmaking as an artistic practice. By considering the cultural heterogeneity and the particular relationship between selves and the concepts of ‘community’ and ‘politicality’ in the region, this programme offers a view into the aesthetic and socio-political complexities of experimental filmmaking within the vast and diverse context of Asia. In 2014, Experimenta India, in collaboration with the Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology, India, and the Centre for Research and Education in Arts and Media, University of Westminster, U.K. hosted ‘Comparing Experimental Cinemas’, an international symposium on experimental moving image practices in Bangalore. This symposium inaugurated the Experimental Cinema in Asia Network (ECAN) of exchange and support amongst moving image art practitioners, curators, academics and researchers from Indonesia, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and India. Motivated by the need to re-establish the terms of inclusion of non-western moving image in exhibition and distribution, ECAN proposes to map and theorize histories, modes and the regionality of experimental moving image practices across localities in Asia.
