Birgit Hein

Cinéaste, curatrice, critique et enseignante, Birgit Hein a joué un rôle essentiel dans l’évolution du cinéma d’avant-garde européen. Amorcée avec Wilhelm Hein, qui fut longtemps son mari, son œuvre comprend de nombreux films et performances réalisés en couple. C’est la projection lors d’EXPRMNTL 4 du premier court métrage des Hein, S & W (1967), produit alors qu’ils sont encore étudiants, qui attire l’attention sur leur recherche structurelle radicale. De retour à Cologne, et dans l’enthousiasme du festival de Knokke, les Hein participent à la création de XSCREEN. Structure mythique dans l’histoire de la diffusion des cinémas différents en Europe, XSCREEN projette périodiquement du cinéma underground (le plus souvent en présence des réalisateurs) et, afin de financer l’organisation de ces séances, du cinéma pornographique (en toute illégalité). Cette double activité de réalisation et de programmation, à laquelle la provocation donne plus de visibilité, place rapidement les Hein au cœur de la scène expérimentale internationale. Deux réalisations importantes de Birgit Hein confirment cette position : la publication en 1971 du livre Film im Underground (premier ouvrage en allemand consacré au cinéma d’avant-garde), puis la direction artistique de la section cinéma de la Documenta 6 (1977) – après laquelle les Hein abandonnent la recherche abstraite pour entreprendre une tournée de performances dans des bars en Allemagne (1978) et dans des musées aux États-Unis (1979), avant de réaliser le long métrage Love Stinks (1982). Depuis la séparation de leur couple au début des années 1990, Birgit Hein a réalisé une série de films aussi justes que décapants, interrogeant avec virulence les préjugés moraux et sexuels. Par son activité d’enseignante (1990-2007), Birgit Hein a formé plusieurs générations de cinéastes indépendants en Allemagne, dont nos invités Matthias Müller et Christoph Girardet.

Filmmaakster, curatrice, critica en docente Birgit Hein heeft een niet te onderschatten rol gespeeld in de evolutie van de Europese avant-gardefilm. Haar oeuvre omvat vele films en performances die ze samen met haar ex-man Wilhelm Hein maakte. Het is de vertoning op EXPRMNTL 4 van hun eerste korte film , S & W (1967), gemaakt toen ze nog studeerden, die de aandacht vestigt op hun radicale structurele onderzoek. Terug in Keulen, nog vol enthousiasme over hun deelname aan het Festival van Knokke, werken ze mee aan de oprichting van XSCREEN. In deze mythische plek in de geschiedenis van alternatieve cinema in Europa wordt underground cinema (meestal in aanwezigheid van de makers) getoond en ook (in alle illegaliteit) pornofilms, om de organisatie van de underground vertoningen te financieren. Die dubbele activiteit van films maken en programmeren, die door het provocatieve aspect heel wat aandacht trekt, plaatst de Heins al snel in het hart van de internationale experimentele scène. Twee belangrijke verwezenlijkingen van Birgit Hein bevestigen die positie: de publicatie van het boek Film im Underground in 1971 (het eerste Duitse boek gewijd aan avant-garde cinema), en haar aanstelling als artistiek directeur van de afdeling film van Documenta 6 (1977). Daarna stappen de Heins af van hun abstracte onderzoek om een tournee van performances in café’s in Duitsland (1978) en musea in de Verenigde Staten (1979) te ondernemen, en om de langspeelfilm Love Stinks (1982) te draaien. Sinds hun scheiding begin jaren 1990 maakte Birgit Hein een reeks even rechtvaardige als bijtende films die op een bijzonder scherpe manier morele en seksuele vooroordelen ondervraagt. Via haar functie als leerkracht (1990-2007) heeft ze in Duitsland verschillende generaties van onafhankelijke filmmakers opgeleid, waaronder onze gasten Matthias Müller en Christoph Girardet.

Partning up with Wilhelm Hein, her husband for many years, her work includes many films and performances that were carried out as a couple. It is during the projection at EXPRMNTL 4 of their first short film, S & W (1967), made while they were still students, that draws attention to their structural and radical research was noticed. Back in Cologne, and  still enthusiast from the Knokke festival, the Hein couple were involved in the creation of XSCREEN. A mythical structure in the history of the distribution of alternative cinema in Europe, XSCREEN periodically projects underground cinema (most often  in the presence of the filmmakers) and, in order to fund the organization of these meetings, pornographic movies (illegally). The dual activity of producing and programming, quickly  positions the Hein’s at the heart of the international experimental scene. Two important achievements by Birgit Hein confirm this position: the publication in 1971 of the book Film im Underground (the first book in German dedicated to avant-garde cinema), followed by the artistic direction of the film program of Documenta 6 (1977) – after which the Hein’s abandoned abstract research to undertake a tour of performances in bars in Germany (1978), and in museums in the United States (1979), before making the feature film Love Stinks (1982). Since the couple’s separation in the early 1990s, Birgit Hein has made a series of  righteous and corrosive, questioning with a particular virulence both moral and sexual prejudices. Through her teaching activities (1990-2007), Birgit Hein trained several generations of independent filmmakers in Germany, including our guests Matthias Müller and Christoph Girardet.
