Suite California, le chef-d’œuvre de Robert Nelson, est un film plein de profondeur, de perspicacité, d’humour et d’intelligence, Nelson étant alors au sommet de ses intentions formelles, et en même temps à son degré le plus élevé de subjectivité et de générosité émotionnelle. Initialement, le projet était de faire un film bien plus long, un carnet de route en plusieurs parties, à travers la grande variété culturelle et géographique de la Californie, le tout, vu, modifié et transformé par le prisme subjectif des expériences et souvenirs du cinéaste. Les deux parties qui forment cette séance, et couvrent la Californie du Sud et la Bay Area, reflètent ce vaste et imprévisible territoire dans lequel se confrontent l’approche personnelle d’un lieu et le lieu lui-même. Bien que les deux films soient traversés de part en part de cet humour propre aux œuvres de Robert Nelson, ils sont également empreints d’une profonde réflexion et d’une intériorité qui révèlent l’expérience subjective qui lie le cinéaste à sa terre natale, ainsi que la place qui y est la sienne.

Robert Nelsons meesterwerk Suite California is een werk waaruit een diepe gevoeligheid spreekt – en inzicht, humor en intelligentie. De film vormt een hoogtepunt in Nelsons formele innovatie en is tegelijk een van zijn meest persoonlijk onthullende en emotioneel genereuze werken. Het project was oorspronkelijk bedoeld als een veel langer reisverslag met verschillende delen dat de brede culturele en geografische diversiteit van Californië zou doorkruisen – het geheel omkaderd, bewerkt en vervormd door Nelsons persoonlijke blik, door zijn eigen ervaringen en herinneringen.

De twee voltooide delen, die Zuid-Californië en de Bay Area beslaan, schetsen het uitgestrekte en onvoorspelbare gebied tussen een rijke persoonlijke interpretatie van een plek en de plek zelf. Hoewel beide werken van begin tot einde getuigen van Nelsons karakteristieke briljante humor, zijn het tegelijk ook diepe reflecties, vol onverwachte, onthullende inzichten over zijn persoonlijke ervaring van de thuisstaat en de eigen plaats daarin.

Robert Nelson’s masterpiece Suite California is a work of deep feeling, insight, humour, and intelligence which finds Nelson working at the height of his formal innovation, and, at the same time, at his most personally revealing and emotionally generous. The project was originally intended as a much longer, multi-part travelogue traversing the wide cultural and geographical diversity of California, all of it framed, modified, and distorted through the subjective lens of Nelson’s own experiences and memories.

The two completed parts, covering Southern California and the Bay Area, trace the vast and unpredictable area between a rich personal reading of a place and the place itself. Although both works feature Nelson’s characteristic brilliant humour throughout, they are also deeply reflective and filled with unexpected, revelatory insight about the subjective experience of his home state, and his own place in it.
