La survie et le désir sont deux thèmes récurrents dans l’œuvre de Chick Strand, et sont souvent traités de pair dans un entrelacement inattendu. C’est dans l’extraordinaire Soft Fiction que cette relation entre survie et désir est sans doute explorée de façon la plus riche et remarquable. Une série d’épisodes reliés de manière conceptuelle, évoque des histoires à la première personne impliquant différentes femmes, et créant un tissu complexe de provocations et d’ambiguïtés.

Autres illustrations de ces thèmes, deux de ses plus beaux et obsédants courts métrages. Artificial Paradise est un des films les plus évocateurs qui ait été tournés sur le sujet du désir, alors que dans l’hypnotique Kristallnacht s’engage une danse inattendue entre la beauté de l’existence et son inévitable envers, l’horreur de la souffrance.

Overleven en verlangen zijn twee zeer vaak terugkerende thema’s in het werk van Chick Strand, die vaak gelijktijdig aan het werk zijn, in een ongewone, verstrengelde relatie. De vruchtbaarste, meest briljante verkenning hiervan is het verbazingwekkende Soft Fiction, waarin een reeks conceptueel gelinkte episodes met verhalen van verschillende vrouwen (gebracht in de ik-persoon) een complex empathisch web weeft van bedachtzame provocaties en dubbelzinnigheden. Twee van haar meest beklijvende en mooie kortfilms diepen deze thema’s verder uit. Artificial Paradise is een van de meest suggestieve films die ooit over sensueel verlangen werden gemaakt. Het hypnotische Kristallnacht gaat dan weer een ongewone dans aan tussen de schoonheid van het bestaan en haar onvermijdelijke keerzijde, de verschrikkingen van het lijden.

Survival and desire are two very commonly recurring themes throughout Chick Strand’s work, often working simultaneously in an unusual interwoven relationship. This is most richly and brilliantly explored in her amazing film Soft Fiction, in which a series of conceptually linked episodes involving first-person narratives by various women creates a complex empathic web of thoughtful provocations and ambiguities. Further illuminating these themes are two of her most haunting and beautiful shorts. Artificial Paradise is one of the more evocative films ever created on the subject of sensual longing, while the hypnotic Kristallnacht engages in an unusual dance between the beauty of existence and its inevitable obverse, the horror of suffering.
