De reeks The Notes is een van de belangrijkste werken in het oeuvre van Saul Levine. Dit ensemble, aangevat in 1968, onderzoekt de verschillende mogelijkheden om non-verbale, puur visueel notities te creëren die zich in de tijd inschrijven. Deze notities, mededelingen of aantekeningen zijn gestructureerd volgens complexe ritmische organisaties van vormen en kleuren. Nu eens zijn ze bestemd voor vrienden, dan weer zijn het getuigenissen van het politiek engagement en activisme van de filmmaker. De projectie toont een selectie films uit de reeks en wil een representatief overzicht bieden van de diversiteit aan stijlen en benaderingen die de filmmaker erin heeft ontwikkeld.

La série The Notes constitue un des corpus les plus importants de l’œuvre de Saul Levine. Entamé en 1968, cet ensemble explore les différentes possibilités de créer des notes non verbales, purement visuelles, qui s’inscrivent dans le temps. Structurées en de complexes organisations rythmiques de formes et de couleurs, ces notes, notices ou annotations, sont tantôt destinées à des amis, tantôt le témoignage de l’engagement et de l’activisme politique du cinéaste. La séance reprend une sélection de films de la série, et tente de donner un aperçu représentatif de la grande diversité de styles et d’approches que le cinéaste y a développée.

The series The Notes is one of the most important works in Saul Levine’s oeuvre. This ensemble, started in 1968, explores the different possibilities to create non-verbal, purely visual notes that inscribe themselves in time. Structured into complex rhythmic organisations of forms and colours, these notes, notices or annotations sometimes are destined for friends, at other times they are testimonies of the filmmaker’s political engagement and activism. The screening shows a selection of films from the series and attempts to provide a representative overview of the great diversity of styles and approaches the filmmaker has developed in there.
