Deux réalisatrices abordant la question du corps par le cinéma d’animation. Une étudiante en arts transforme avec passion et inventivité (avec l’aide discrète mais précieuse d’Alain Cavalier) un carnet de dessins en film. Ce journal de sa scoliose et des migraines ophtalmiques qui brouillent son regard est un film de corps et d’objets, de référents verticaux et de courbes en S qui ne s’y plient pas, mais aussi d’humour et d’espoir. Inspirée par la figure de Chostakovitch coincé à la fois par les nazis et les staliniens lors du siège de Leningrad en 1941, l’animatrice et collagiste Martha Colburn anime des poupées aux corps démantibulés qui finissent par s’affranchir de la pesanteur et de la peur, dans un conte noir qui finit par s’éclairer et se colorer.

 Twee filmmaaksters stellen vragen over lichamelijkheid door middel van animatie. Een jonge kunststudente zet haar schetsboek met passie en inventiviteit (en met de discrete maar waardevolle hulp van Alain Cavalier) om in film. Dit dagboek van haar zijdelingse ruggengraatsvergroeiing en de oogmigraine die haar zicht vertroebelt is een film vol lichamen, objecten, verticale referenties en S-curves die zich niet willen plooien, maar ook vol humor en hoop. Geïnspireerd door Sjostakovitsj, die tijdens het beleg van Leningrad in 1941 zowel door de nazi’s als door de stalinisten in het nauw gedreven werd, animeert collagemaakster en animatiefilmer Martha Colburn poppen met ontmantelde lichamen die uiteindelijk de zwaartekracht en hun angst overwinnen in een donker verhaal dat uiteindelijk licht en kleurrijk wordt.

Two woman directors address the issue of the body through animation. A young Art student transforms with passion and creativity (with discreet but valuable help from Alain Cavalier) a sketchbook into a film. This journal of her scoliosis and ophthalmic migraines that blur her sight is a film of bodies and objects, vertical references and S-curves that do not bend, but also of humor and hope. Inspired by the figure of Shostakovich trapped by both the Nazis and the Stalinists during the siege of Leningrad in 1941, filmmaker and collagist Martha Colburn animates pulled-apart dolls that eventually overcome gravity and fear in a dark tale that is illuminated and colored.
