Say Amen, Somebody is ontegensprekelijk een van de films die de wereld van de gospelmuziek het best documenteert. De film focust voornamelijk op het leven en de carrière van twee grootmeesters (en pioniers) van deze muziek die haar wortels heeft in de liedjes van de Afro-Amerikaanse slaven, de negrospirituals: ‘Mother’ Willie Mae Ford Smith en ‘Professor’ Thomas A. Dorsey. Via hun respectievelijke parcours keren we terug naar de begindagen van de gospel en de ontwikkeling en uitdagingen waarmee de oprichters, in het bijzonder de vrouwen, werden geconfronteerd. Ook het humanisme van degenen die zich ‘geroepen’ hebben gevoeld om het evangelie te verspreiden via deze transcendente en vrolijke muzikale vorm komt aan bod. Andere artiesten zoals Sallie Martin, The Barrett Sisters en The O’Neill Brothers vervolledigen de affiche van deze opwindende documentaire die bij zijn release door talrijke tijdschriften (People Magazine, Rolling Stone, enz.) als een van de tien beste films van het jaar werd beschouwd.

Say Amen, Somebody est sans conteste un des films qui documentent le mieux le monde de la musique gospel. Il s’intéresse particulièrement à la vie et la carrière de deux des grands maîtres (et pionniers) de cette musique qui trouve ses racines dans les chants des esclaves afro-américains, les negro spirituals : « Mother » Willie Mae Ford Smith et « Professor » Thomas A. Dorsey. À travers leurs parcours respectifs, nous revenons sur les premiers jours du gospel, son développement, les défis auxquels ont été confrontés leurs fondateurs – particulièrement les femmes – et l’humanisme de ceux qui se sont sentis « appelés » à répandre l’Évangile grâce à cette forme musicale transcendante et joyeuse. D’autres artistes comme Sallie Martin, The Barrett Sisters, et The O’Neill Brothers complètent l’affiche de ce documentaire exaltant, considéré à sa sortie comme un des dix meilleurs films de l’année par nombreuses revues (People Magazine, Rolling Stone, etc.).

Without a doubt one of the films that documents best the world of gospel music, Say Amen, Somebody is particularly interested in the life and career of two of the great masters (and pioneers) of this music which has its roots in the songs of the Afro-American slaves, the negro spirituals: “Mother” Willie Mae Ford Smith and “Professor” Thomas A. Through their respective journeys, we return to the first days of gospel, its development, the challenges faced by the founders – especially women – and the humanism of those who felt that they were “called” to spread the gospel through this transcendent and joyful musical form.
