Birgit Hein fait partie des cinéastes qui ont eu à la fois une influence durable sur l’histoire du cinéma expérimental et qui continuent à influencer la scène d’avant-garde actuelle. En plus des films qu’elle a réalisés, elle a écrit de nombreux textes critiques qui, dès les années 1970, ont aidé à rendre le public du cinéma et des autres arts sensible au cinéma expérimental. Birgit Hein fait valoir qu’il est impossible de faire des films sans avoir une idée des possibilités et des objectifs concrets du média cinématographique et que chaque projet de film doit être basé sur cette idée. Ce volume, qui comprend des textes écrits au cours de quatre décennies, propose une sélection d’articles de Birgit Hein et d’entretiens avec la cinéaste, illustré de nombreuses photographies inédites.

Birgit Hein behoort tot de filmmakers die een blijvende invloed hebben op de geschiedenis van experimentele film en tegelijk de actuele experimentele scene beïnvloeden. Bovenop het maken van films schreef Hein ook een aantal kunstkritische teksten die hebben geholpen om het genre van de experimentele film vanaf de jaren zeventig een plaatsje te geven in het bewustzijn van een in film en kunst geïnteresseerd publiek. Birgit Hein stelt dat het onmogelijk is films te maken zonder een idee te hebben van de werkelijke mogelijkheden en doelstellingen van het medium film en dat elke filmproject gebaseerd moet zijn op dit idee. Dit volume, met teksten uit vier decennia, bevat een selectie van de belangrijkste teksten van, en interviews met Birgit Hein, aangevuld met commentaren en tal van ongepubliceerde foto’s.

Birgit Hein belongs to the filmmakers who have had a lasting influence on the history and the present scene of the experimental film. In addition to her films she wrote a number of critical texts that, since the 1970’s, helped to establish in the consciousness of a public, interested in art and film, the genre of experimental film. Birgit Hein argues that film work is impossible without a notion of the actual possibilities and purposes of the film medium, and that every single film project must be based on this general idea. Surveying a period of four decades the volume comprises a selection of Birgit Heins most important texts and interviews, complemented by commentaries and numerous unpublished photographies, which finally become accessible.
